From 17th to 21st of October, the 15th National Congress of the Chinese Trade Unions was solemnly held in Beijing. Over 1770 full delegates and over 280 specially invited representatives from various trades and professions across China attended the meeting to discuss matters of vital importance of the Chinese trade unions. The theme of the congress was endeavoring to build up trade unions with Chinese characteristics, rallying and mobilizing the nationwide hundreds of millions of workers to strive for new victories in the all-round construction of a well-off society.
The national congress of the Chinese trade unions is held once every five years. The work report made by ACFTU Chairman Wang Zhaoguo on behalf of ACFTU’s 14th Executive Committee was heard, reviewed and adopted at the said congress. The report has summarized the achievements made in the trade union work in the past five years and has put forward the work tasks for the coming five years. The congress has reviewed and adopted the report of the trade unions on financial work as well as the work report of the ACFTU Audit Committee on Expenses, reviewed and modified the Constitution of the Chinese Trade Unions and elected a new leading body of the All-China Federation of Trade Unions.
On 17th of October, the Chinese President Hu Jintao, the Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress Wu Bangguo, the State Council Premier Wen Jiabao, the Chairman of the National People’s Political Consultative Conference Jia Qinglin and the Chinese Vice-president Xi Jinping attended the opening ceremony of the congress. Xi Jinping delivered a congratulatory speech to the congress on behalf of the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party.
