On 21st of October, leaders such as the Chinese President Hu Jintao and the Vice-president Xi Jinping had an informal discussion with the new ACFTU leaders elected at the 15th National Congress of Chinese Trade Unions and some of the delegates to the congress at the Great Hall of the People. Hu Jintao stressed that the Chinese working class represents China’s advanced productive forces and production relations. The Chinese working class is entrusted with the glorious historical tasks in the great practice of constructing a well-off society in an all-round way and accelerating the socialist modernization and should carry forward the glorious traditions and seize the opportunities for development to strive for new deeds of merit; should always take vigorous action to join in the reforms and innovations as masters of the state and unswervingly contribute to the great cause of reform and opening up; should set up an example in advancing the scientific development and promoting the social harmony, so as to make new contributions to the socialist economic, political, cultural and social constructions as well as to the construction of the ecological civilization.

        Hu Jintao demanded that trade unions at all levels should stick to the road for the development of the socialist trade unions with Chinese characteristics and continually enhance their competence in serving the masses of workers; that trade unions should improve the ideological and moral character, scientific and cultural knowledge of the workers in an all-round way, make efforts to cultivate a great number of knowledgeable, technical and innovative competent workers and constantly facilitate the process of engrafting knowledge among workers; that trade unions should conscientiously heed the voice of the workers, timely reflect the aspirations of the workers, do good deeds, work practically and overcome difficulties for workers in a down-to-earth manner, especially allay worries and tide over difficulties for needy workers, improve the labor-relation coordination mechanism, facilitate the realization of the decent work and the harmonization of the labor relations and promote social harmony and stability and that trade unions should organize as many workers as possible into trade unions.

        Hu Jintao demanded that leading bodies at all levels should firmly adhere to the principle of relying on the working class wholeheartedly, show respect for workers’ originality and give full play to the role of the working class as the main force; that the leading bodies should improve the systems for the broad masses of workers to participate in the management of the state and social affairs and in the democratic management of the enterprises and earnestly address the issues concerning the most immediate and realistic interests of the common concern among workers to enable the workers to share the fruitful results of the reform and the development; that the leading bodies should give backing to the trade unions in conducting work in a creative way and give as many resources and means as possible to trade union organizations.
